What is the significance of John Hancock's signature?

John Hancock, who was the president of the Second Continental Congress, was the first to sign the Declaration. But John Hancock became famous not only for signing the Declaration but for his signature itself!

Hancock's large, sprawling signature with its ornate capitals, so stands out above all other signatures, that even to this day whenever someone is asked for their "John Hancock," they are being asked to sign their name.
